“Ultra”: going beyond what is usual or ordinary; excessive. At BH, we have gone beyond,
and we are proud to introduce a new bike design that shatters all previous performance
benchmarks for weight and stiffness. The frame of the Ultralight weighs as
little as 747g (medium size, painted). You will become an ultra fan of our new high-end
road bike as soon as you see it.
Setting standards
Besides, the Ultralight is the first BH bike to feature the new BB386EVO bottom
bracket system, developed by BH Bikes and FSA. With the introduction of this bottom
bracket system, combined with new precision carbon moulding techniques, cuttingedge
materials, and avant-garde design, BH Bikes has developed a groundbreaking
new bike that sets a new standard in the bicycle industry.
“The purpose of this project was to develop a model that was lighter than the G5 and
thus earn a place for ourselves in the production ultralight bicycle segment while improving
the traditional handicap of this type of vehicles: stiffness,” remarks the Head
of the BH Road Bicycle Department, Roberto López. “To attain this goal, we’ve worked
with FSA, our perfect mate in this adventure, since FSA is the world’s leading bottom
bracket manufacturer and has experience working with carbon parts. Together, we’ve
developed the new BB386EVO system, an oversized bottom bracket which allows for
wider tubes and increased stiffness while retaining the same weight,” Mr López adds.
The BB386EVO allows for an all-carbon bottom bracket shell, 86.5mm in width x
46mm in diameter, maximising the amount of area the frame manufacturers have to
work with, and increasing stiffness and strength. The new system is optimised for the
new FSA K-Force Light BB386 and SLK Light BB386 carbon spindle cranks. What is
special about the new design is the curve in the crank which, with a longer spindle,
keeps the distance be
tween the pedals (Q-factor) similar to that in any other crank.
Even stiffer
The Ultralight frame means, without a doubt, one of the greatest achievements by BH
in the field of racing frames, as we have increased torsional stiffness and rear end
stiffness by 166% and 125%, respectively. In addition, maximised tube sizing, the
1.5” head tube, and the seat tube section contribute to the Ultralight’s lateral stiffness.
The Ultralight’s integrated full carbon front derailleur mount keeps weight low and
stiffness high when replacing chainrings. The derailleur hanger is forged in 7075 aluminium,
developed through extensive finite element analysis studies used to determine
the stiffest structure possible under heavy shifting loads.
The full slotted monocoque carbon cable guides on the down tube reduce weight
and make maintenance easier. The unique cable guide allows cable to be routed traditionally or crossed at the guide to provide the bike a cleaner cable routing solution
around the head tube.
The lightest production bike
As with the frame, the Ultralight’s fork was developed using cutting-edge composite
moulding techniques and material technologies resulting in a fork weight under 300
grams out of the mould, which successfully meets the safety requirements and
test methods in the European standard EN 14781.
The Ultralight fork features an integrated crown race to further eliminate the need for
heavy aluminium parts in the frame to house the bearing and optimises the strength
and stiffness of the transition from the steer tube to the fork crown.
“We’ve changed the way we make the fork and the carbon construction. Using the
same mould of the G5, we’ve made a fork that’s lighter than its predecessor by 40g,”
explains Mr López, underscoring the bicycle’s final weigh: 4,800kg when fully assembled.
“We’ve made the lightest production bicycle in the market,” he says proudly.
Nicola Spirig: “You feel the bike pushes you forward”
“Our lab tests show that the Ultralight’s average stiffness is 35% higher than the
G5’s. Riders of pro teams Caja Rural and Burgos 2016 are using the new frame, and
they sound very enthusiastic about it. Nicola Spirig, winner of the Triathlon World Cup
in Madrid, says the new bike has an incredible ride quality and delivers great performance
in climbs and sprints. She feels the bike pushes her forward. This is the result
of frame stiffness and the geometry of the rear triangle, with 400mm chain stays. When
we unveiled this model at Sea Otter Classic, the bicycling festival held in the US, both
the public and the media found it awesome,” Mr López states.
As you can see, the new Ultralight is BH’s best cared for model, a frame of superior
quality and unrivalled performance.
